We prefer to talk about “discount” mattresses than “cheap” mattresses because the first term can include great quality items whereas the second term generally only looks at the price – which can be a pitfall when choosing anything, let alone something you would hope to keep in your house and use every day for the next ten years or so.

The first thing is to know your own requirements. It’s no good getting the greatest deal on Earth on a luxuriously soft Tempur-pedic memory foam bed if what you need is a very firm mattress to ease your back complaints! So addressing your own requirements first and foremost is what you need to do – for example, do you have any special posture complaints that need considering? Do you have personal preference for materials used like inner-spring, latex or memory foam? What about allergies – do you need anti-bacterial and dust-mite free promises from your mattress? What’s your preference of finish – firm or plush? Do you have a preferred manufacturer? How long do you want your mattress to last? Will it be used every night or just occasionally in the spare room? Do you have a set budget? These are just some of the considerations you will need to make before looking for your mattress.
When it comes time to do your shopping there are many resources online that you can use nowadays of course. It’s no longer the case of choosing one of the models in the local bedding store. Now you can read reviews and manufacturers sites online until you are blue in the face!
Our suggestion would be to balance the traditional approach with the modern approach. Beds are quite literally a “touchy” subject… we have a very intimate relationship with our mattress and it’s almost impossible to confidently select one without having tried some out by lying on them, despite the advances in technology that allow some manufacturers to say they can find your perfect mattress just by taking multiple body measurements.
If, however, you have taken the time to go around the bedding stores and have found a few models you are interested in, you can make a note of the exact model and specification and then try to track it down online. Often retailers will have discounted mattresses online, trying to take advantage of a national market rather than just the local market; overheads are lower so they pass savings on to the customer. They may also have sales of clearance lines. This is a great way for you to save money – often a significant amount – and you have the confidence that you already know what the mattress feels like to lie on, so you are not jumping in blind to a major purchase.
With online retailers of course you need to find a trusted one that does what it says and has established selection, ordering, payment and delivery procedures. That way the correct, right-sized discount mattress will arrive in tact, on time and ready for use!
