Things to Look Out for when Shopping for a King Size Mattress
To help take some of the confusion out of buying a new mattress, Cheap Mattress Reviews was founded to provide you with consumer reviews of all the leading mattresses available today.
If you’ve decided you need to upgrade to a king size mattress your decision might not be quite as simple as you think. For starters there are 4 different sizes that fall into the broad description of “king size”, not to mention all the different makers, materials, comfort levels and price ranges available nowadays. Perhaps we can simplify things a little here, for you.
Firstly the actual sizes you may come across when looking for King size mattresses are the standard King, the California King, the Super King and the Grand King, but even within these there are variations depending on the origins of the mattress – a UK King is different to a US King, which is different again to an Asian or European King, so you will need to bear this in mind if you are looking at imported mattresses.
If we concentrate on North America, a standard King here measures 76 inches wide × 80 inches long. A California King is narrower and longer at 72 inches × 84 inches; a Super King will only be found in imported UK mattress ranges and measures 72 inches × 78 inches, so it is the same width as a California King but shorter; finally the Grand King is an extra-long bed that you will find only in the Sleep Number range from Select Comfort, measuring 80 inches × 98 inches.
Presumably if you are upgrading to a King size mattress you need more room on your bed. Just be careful that you are aware which particular style of King you are getting from the choices above and make sure you measure your room to make sure that it fits! You wouldn’t be the first person to buy a wider mattress that has problems fitting in to the room you’d hope to put it.
Whether you choose a traditional style inner-spring mattress or one made of memory foam or latex, or a combination, will depend on your personal comfort and support preferences as well as your budget. You can, of course, find a cheap king size mattress at online retailers that provide discounts on ranges that you will find in the stores, but if you are considering buying online make sure that you have at least tried the model out in a store beforehand. There really is no substitute for checking comfort and support levels first hand and no amount of research on online review sites will change that. However, there is nothing to stop you actually buying the mattress online, having tested it in a bedding store.
If you are buying a King size mattress it is likely that it will be a sizeable investment and you are hoping for it to last. He first thing to bear in mind here is that if you buy a mattress based on price alone – that is, if you go cheap without checking out the quality of the manufacturer, materials and craftsmanship – then it could backfire. Here you need to research and find out what you are getting for your money.
Secondly you will want to protect your purchase once you have bought it. This will mean that you may have to turn the mattress 180 degrees every now and again, or flip it over, so that it keeps its shape. Another thing you can do is to buy a king size mattress protector when you buy your mattress. This is a cover or pad that will sit on top of the mattress (it may be waterproof) and protect it from perspiration and other stains, as well as sometimes providing the sleeper with better dust mite protection. It is, of course, removable, so that it can be machine-washed easily.
