The sofa bed or “hide-a-bed” is a dual-function furniture item that usually features a frame, which doubles up as a bed-stand and a sofa bed mattress which doubles up as a sofa cushion. Sofa bed mattresses are usually used with a cover, which makes them easy to keep in good condition. If there are spillages on the sofa then you can protect the mattress by making sure your cover is waterproof and they can also be removed easily for vacuuming up of dust and crumbs.
These mattresses may be foam or inner-spring based or the whole sofa bed may take the form of a futon, where the mattress will be filled with cotton and batting, which will get padded down over time and become denser. If you ensure that you buy a good quality wooden or steel futon frame then it may outlast your mattress by a number of years; this is no problem as you can usually buy a sofa bed mattress replacement from the same retailers that stock the sofa bed sets.
Other sofa bed designs may mean that you are sleeping on a poor-quality inner coil mattress with an uncomfortable metal bar running down the middle of the bed. Sofa bed frames and mattresses may come in a variety of sizes now, from the Chair Sleeper size to a Queen size 60 x 72 inches. When used as a sofa the Queen will seat up to 3 people; the smaller ones will only seat two people and because of this they are sometimes termed “love seats”.
