Top Mattress Brands – Lasting the Test of Time
To help take some of the confusion out of buying a new mattress, Cheap Mattress Reviews was founded to provide you with consumer reviews of all the leading mattresses available today.
We don’t place a lot of faith in lists of the Top 5 or 10 mattresses out there on review sites, for various reasons, but it is reasonable to talk about the most established manufacturers that have a history of quality mattress-making and who have a proven track record of being at the leading edge of the associated technology and design innovations in the top mattress brands in the stores.
We will try to piece together what are generally considered the top 10 mattress brands, though it should be noted this is in no particular order and is strictly based on longevity rather than us personally testing all of their mattresses! There is a lot to be said for the ability to stick around through decades of boom and bust and there are a number of makers who date back to the 1800′s.
We start with Stearns and Foster as they have been around since 1846. This company was started by 2 men who found a niche in making high-end horse carriage upholstery and later hotel mattresses. They were behind the first luxury mattresses in the US and survive today with their reputation for hand-made fine quality mattresses, using the best inner materials, fabrics and craftsmen, still in tact. Stearns and Foster mattresses are now made a trademark of Sealy, which is the largest selling brand of mattress in the world.
The Sealy Corporation are based in North Carolina and have been making mattresses since 1881, when a cotton gin builder started using compressed cotton to manufacture models for his friends. This caught on to such an extent that he was able to secure patents and the business grew from there. Nowadays Sealy’s mattresses are sold under the brand names of Bassett and Posturepedic as well as the Sealy name and Stearns and Foster.
Simmons are another brand known for longevity and quality, having started manufacturing mattresses in 1870, with their BeautyRest mattresses being their flagship product for many decades. They are now based out of Georgia. Unfortunately the latest recession was one too many and in 2009 Simmons filed for bankruptcy, but the Simmons brand name is so strong that future owners will retain the name and you will continue to see Simmons models on the bedding store floors.
Next Kingsdown, a manufacturer known for their MySide and SleepingBeauty ranges. They were founded in 1904 so have also been making top mattresses for over a century. They started life making box-spring mattresses as the Mebane Bedding Company in North Carolina. Recently they have become more known for their BodyDiagnostics system that allows users to measure their body dimensions to tailor make the “ideal” model for their unique shape and weight.
Serta is based in Illinois and is partly owned by the National Bedding Company. The company was founded in 1934 and is known for supplying the hotel and lodging sector, but they also make household brand names like the PerfectSleeper mattresses. They are the second largest mattress maker in the US, after Sealy.
KingKoil is another old company that has withstood the ravages of time. Formed in 1898 in Minnesota, you will know them from the Comfort Solutions brand name nowadays. Like all the leading manufacturers they have had to change with the times and adopt memory foam and latex into their ranges to supplement the traditional robust innerspring mattresses that they are known for.
Englander is a New York based manufacturer that was founded in 1894, with a vision to provide luxury mattresses. Nowadays they maintain the commitment to high levels of craftsmanship and combine that with latest technologies and materials like memory foam and latex to deliver modern and durable models.
Jamison is another of those traditional companies that was formed in 1883 in Tennessee. They originally made their name supplying mattresses commercially to the hospitality industry and the US Government and this commercial-focus continues today, though they also market domestically. Jamison is the exclusive licensee for Hypnos mattresses in the US also.
This leads us onto the Hypnos brand. This is a British company formed over a hundred years ago, again blending the irreplaceable quality that comes from great craftsmanship with the modern approach of the best new materials. Their finishes are luxurious, using hand-stitching of fine natural fabrics like wool, cotton and silk, and the body of their mattresses is usually a very stable and well-made pocket-spring system.
Finally in this run-down of the top 10 makers of the best mattresses for the US market, we come to Tempur-pedic. Around 20 years ago this company took the concept of memory foam, which was designed to ease the G-Force pressures experienced by NASA astronauts during take-off, and spent years to re-design it into something that could be used in the bedding market. You now see their mattresses stocked in all the leading bedding stores and despite their high price range and competition from the lower end of the market, their products remain good sellers.
We hope that this introduction to the leading mattress brands available in the US has given you a starting point for your research if you are looking at a high-end mattress in terms of workmanship, design and materials.
